Visit to London - A trip of a lifetime

Have you ever wondered which city gathers all types of cultures, as well as, all kinds of music and art expressions? The answer is London, of course, for us, the capital of Europe!

In fact, it is a diverse and exciting city with some of the world's best sights, attractions and activities. With so much to do, it's hard to choose which places you should visit. In that task we were helped by our teachers and Mr. António Barros from IES (International Education Services) who were excellent tour guides.

Concerning the trip, we landed in England in the morning of May 8th.  After leaving the bags in the hotel, we went to Piccadilly Circus to have lunch. Piccadilly is an intersection of streets that is particularly known for its video display and neon signs as well as the amount of shops in the neighbourhood, for instance, the M&M’s shop.
In spite of the light rain (which only visited us that afternoon, by the way), we were feeling motivated enough to walk (rather than take the bus), so we walked through Piccadilly Circus, past Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park, the National Gallery, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. We visited the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, a sequence of numbered rooms where Western European paintings from the 13th to the 19th centuries could be admired. The masters whose works of art are on display inside the museum are so many and so famous, that to mention just a few seems almost irresponsible or disrespectful towards all the others. However, Van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci and Boticelli are some that will forever remain in our mind.

On Saturday the high point of the morning was the ride on the London Eye. The London Eye has been a major feature of London's skyline since 1999. From its 32 capsules, each weighing 10 tonnes and holding up to 25 people, in a 30-minute ride, it is possible to enjoy the best view of London and to identify and read about more than 55 of London's most famous landmarks. We did notice, however, that London is changing very fast, with modern buildings rising in the midst of the historical city.

In the afternoon Saint Paul’s cathedral, the Millennium Bridge, Tate Modern and the southern bank of the river Thames were our main destinations.  We did also visit Covent Garden and watched some street artists’ performances.
On the warm Sunday morning of our stay in London our first stop was Camden Market, the place to go to experience a culturally alternative world. It is a favourite spot for locals and tourists alike, who cannot get tired of admiring the original façades and looking for the best bargains in the market. Exotic food to match all tastes is available on the premises.

In the afternoon, we visited the area surrounding the Tower of London and Tower Bridge and had the privilege of cruising the Thames while listening to the explanation provided by the local guide about the history of the luxurious blocks of flats which had formerly been busy warehouses. He did mention the existence of a lot of pubs in the area, another iconic reference in London, but our destination was The Royal Observatory of Greenwich. Besides taking the mandatory pictures one foot on each side of the line that separates the west from the east, we could visit the exhibitions available and outside enjoy the panoramic view of a sunny afternoon spent by London residents lying on one of the extensive parks of the city.  We could also admire the legendary ship “Cutty Sark” near the river.

In the evening we went to the famous Hard Rock café, where we visited the shop because to visit the café it would be necessary to have made a reservation.

On May 11th we finally visited the famous Madame Tussauds. At Madame Tussauds, we could pretend to be stars among stars and have, of course, the photos to prove it.
One of the other stops on this day was the Natural History Museum. As well as the permanent and always crowd-gathering dinosaur exhibition, the Natural History Museum includes a collection of the biggest, tallest and rarest animals in the world, as well as other interesting exhibitions in the fields of biology and geology, for example.
In the evening (at 6 pm!), we had dinner in Planet Hollywood and then some of us went to The Apollo Theatre located on Shaftesbury Avenue in London's West End to watch the musical Wicked, the type of show everyone should attend.
On the last day we visited the British Museum. The world-famous British Museum cannot be seen on a morning or even a day, such is the importance of its collections, from the Parthenon sculptures to the mummies in the Ancient Egypt collection.
In the afternoon we still had time to go shopping in Oxford Street.
This was, clearly, a trip of a lifetime for us, and if you ever have the opportunity, don’t hesitate and go to London!
